United Community is a 53-year-old nonprofit offering an array of human services that lift families out of poverty. We engage community voice and family participation to break the cycle of generational poverty.Â

83% of our clients live at or below the federal poverty level. Our service area has a high concentration of affordable housing, but few amenities, features, or supports to help residents – especially low-income and residents of color – to improve their quality of life.

Maria’s first interaction with United Community was through a program that provides critical basic needs and supportive services to families in need of emergency assistance. Maria was experiencing food insecurity and needed dental work, but was not in a financial position to get the care she needed. United Community provided her with food and financial assistance to finish her dental work and encouraged her to enroll in our English as a Second Language course to open doors of opportunity. Maria not only learned English, but she also met friends and neighbors and became part of the community. Today, Maria is an advocate for other women and young mothers in similar circumstances and an active volunteer at her daughter’s elementary school. Â
