Picture"Our future would look very different without UCM."
The lives of twin sisters Avery and Ana have been transformed by UCM, thanks to generous community support like yours. Now in college, the twins have experienced more than their fair share of unfortunate family circumstances. Avery and Ava credit UCM for their academic success, leadership, and commitment to service. Read their full story >>

Children like Avery and Ava deserve a better life, and with UCM's help -- with
your help -- they are moving toward their goal of careers in medicine. Every year, UCM nurtures thousands of needy children in the Huntington-Mount Vernon community -- more than any other nonprofit agency in our area.

United Community Ministries relies on community contributions during this season of giving to help us run our programs through the coming year. Your donation to UCM gives working poor families and children a fighting chance to create a better life for themselves. Your financial support is greatly needed and deeply appreciated.

Your gift provides the next generation with essential education and enriching experiences. Your generosity means food, rental assistance, and more for people in immediate need. And because of your support, adults can increase their employability through our literacy, citizenship, and other referral services.

In this season of giving, please join us right now in ensuring that low-income families and children continue to have opportunities to achieve stability and success:
  • $100 can provide supplemental food for a family for one month.
  • $250 can provide art and other supplies for enriching after-school programs. That's just $20 per month when you choose monthly giving.
  • $400 can provide rental or utility assistance to help a family avoid eviction.

Your charitable gift provides one of the best investments in our community: comprehensive programs and services for children, youth, and families that provide the pathway to financial security. Gifts in any amount are all appreciated.

It is truly you, as a member of our community, who provides the funding for families in need. Together, we are changing lives -- and every life changed contributes to a stronger community for us all.

Please, join us at the heart of community with a year-end gift to UCM. Make your gift to change lives today. Thank you!

We are excited to introduce our new Volunteer and Community Relations Coordinator, April Love, who joined UCM in November. April is a graduate of Lynchburg College and has hit the ground running, eager to meet volunteers -- including new ones at our weekly Volunteer Orientation sessions.

"Everyone I have met has been very welcoming," says April. "I am enjoying visiting our many program locations to match up their needs to our volunteers' interests and skills. My predecessor Emily Griffin, who is now our UCM Development Associate, has been so helpful to answer my questions."

April continues, "I am new to the Alexandria area and UCM, but have been passionate about community service my whole life. I'm proud to have more than 1,000 hours of service in the Bonner Leader AmeriCorps Program at 10 nonprofit social service agencies. Most recently, I was teaching at a charter school. UCM's mission to educate and empower families and youth to create a better future for themselves aligns with my personal values. I feel privileged to work and serve here."

"Volunteers are at the heart of the work we do. I am excited about some new ideas we have to make volunteering at UCM even easier," she explains. "For example, we are having a few people test out a new a new online 'virtual' volunteer orientation session, which we hope will be more convenient for prospective volunteers and groups. Stay tuned for an announcement soon!"

April can be reached at april.love@ucmagency.org or 571.255.8973.

Community Partner Spotlight: Five Below

"For me, it's all about the kids," says Jimmie Bennett, store manager at Five Below at Mount Vernon Plaza."Five Below is happy to help the kids and families who we do business with. The core values of UCM align with our company core values."  Jimmie is pictured (left with his District Manager, Thanh Pham (right).

When the store moved to a larger location at the shopping center last summer, Jimmie contacted UCM to offer to donate his excess inventory of youth items for youth in our programs. During back to school season, caring Five Below customers purchased and donated more than 400 backpacks to UCM.

For the past two holiday seasons, Jimmie has not only hosted in-store Collection Bins for the UCM Holiday Gift Room; he also has the cashiers ask cusotmers if they'd like to purchase a gift to donate for children. Last year, more than 20 overflowing bins of toys, books, and games arrived at UCM donated by Five Below customers. And this year, the Five Below store at the Plaza at Landmark has also joined in to support UCM.

"I grew up in a large family that was sometimes on the brink of losing our home," continues Jimmie. "I know what it feels like for these kids whose families are struggling to make ends meet. I know what it feels like not to have a new t-shirt or the latest gadget to fit in with my schoolmates. I'm grateful to be able to partner with UCM and that we can help in some small way to foster kids' self-esteem and help them succeed."

"We are grateful to Jimmie and businesses such as Five Below who partner with UCM to increase goodwill in the community," says Kay Long, UCM Chief External Affairs Officer. "We have many ways that that businesses can engage with us to further their business goals, including event sponsorships and group volunteer projects. Together, we are changing lives to build a stronger community for us all."
