Amid this season of giving, United Community is grateful to our generous supporters. Because of you, thousands of individuals and families have been touched by United Community’s supportive services. And with your continued generosity, we can continue our important work in the community.
Because of you…
Imani first came to United Community, unemployed, lacking health insurance, and needing emergency dental care. United Community assists clients with urgent needs, but we also work to help move them toward stability. Imani had cybersecurity training, but lacked the direct experience needed to gain employment. She had identified a certification program but could not afford the tuition and did not have transportation to the training site. Because of the support of our generous donors, not only was United Community able to provide her emergency dental care, we also were able to pay for part of her cybersecurity training as well as transportation assistance.
Imani completed the 20-week training program, received her cybersecurity certification, and quickly found a job. She now has health insurance, is earning over $80,000 annually and can support her husband, a doctoral candidate at George Mason University. United Community has changed her life for the better, as she herself described it.
“I really wanted to get into this field, and United Community made it possible. I don’t know how long it would have taken me to save to take this training. Since I have been working, my husband and I are worrying much less about our expenses. We are moving from a low point to a high point. This is a breakthrough for us.”
The families served by United Community have always faced immense challenges. The beginning of the pandemic intensified these challenges, increasing the demand for food assistance 200% overnight. Rising inflation and other economic difficulties have continued to hit our community hard. Getting by, let alone getting ahead, is increasingly difficult.
Now more than 6,000 household fresh food and canned goods at our food pantry and six mobile distribution sites throughout the community. Our food program is a lifeline to the households in our service area, which includes the two zip codes which experience the highest rates of poverty in Fairfax County. The food program is just one example of the vital programming made possible by our committed supporters. The current state of the economy means more families may be seeking assistance in the coming year. Only with your generous support will United Community be able to meet the needs of families and individuals in our community.
United Community’s Progreso Literacy and Citizenship Center empower immigrants through English language education and citizenship services. Hector and Carmen’s story is a shining example of how the services we offer at United Community are transforming lives of people in our community because of your generous support.
Hector and Carmen and their two children came to the United States from Venezuela several years ago, seeking political asylum. Shortly after their arrival, they enrolled in Progreso’s English as a Second Language classes and began the asylum process, working with our immigration attorney.
The asylum process can be lengthy but recently, Hector and Carmen received word that they have been granted asylum, meaning they no longer live in fear of being deported, have a path to citizenship, and can truly move forward to establish their lives in this country. This what the Progreso team does every day, work with clients to secure a better future for their families.
Today, Hector and Carmen work in a warehouse of a national retailer receiving good salaries. They can provide for their family AND save money for their future, including college for their children.
Your support has tremendous impact on the lives of people like Hector and Carmen to build thriving communities. Make your gift today.
Children hold a special place in our hearts at United Community, so we provide impactful learning opportunities, enriching environments, and life-changing support to them and their families.
Your generous end of year gift to United Community will make it possible for us to serve:
