Christmas in July: How One Volunteer Turned an Idea into a Community Movement

Christmas in july Campaign

At United Community, we’re fortunate to have volunteers who don’t just give their time—they bring new ideas, fresh energy, and a deep commitment to helping their neighbors.

One of those volunteers is Craig, whose simple idea has grown into a new campaign that’s helping stock our food pantry during one of the most challenging times of the year.

Craig first became involved with United Community in December 2015, volunteering in our Holiday Gift Room.

“Along Route One, we see a harsh mixture of extremes,” he says. “Extreme wealth and opportunity for some, but also real needs for others. I always wanted to do something to benefit children, and I loved how the Holiday Gift Room provided for the children most at risk.”

More than a decade later, Craig and his Tuesday morning volunteer group are still showing up each week to sort and organize food in our pantry.

“We all believe in the mission of United Community and know that everything we do supports someone in need.”

It was during one of those volunteer shifts that Craig noticed a pattern. While food donations pour in during the holiday season, the shelves become much harder to keep stocked during the summer, just as many children lose access to the free breakfasts and lunches they receive during the school year.

“I mentioned the idea of a Christmas in July food drive in casual conversation with my Tuesday morning group, and they thought it could be very successful.” That conversation became the start of Christmas in July.

The campaign serves as an important reminder that hunger doesn’t take a summer vacation.

“Many generous people think of food disparities around the holidays,” Craig explains. “While these year-end donations are great, families in need struggle to put food on the table every day. Hopefully, this campaign will remind everyone to give their support all year long, not just in November and December.”

The goal is simple: fill the pantry during the summer months so families continue to have access to nutritious food until holiday donations begin arriving later in the year.

Over the years, volunteering has also shaped Craig’s perspective.

“Anyone may find themselves in a bad situation when the economy is turned on its head,” he says. “Fortunately, I’ve learned that there are many people who are willing to step up and work hard to fix a problem.”

That spirit of neighbors helping neighbors is exactly what Christmas in July is all about.

When reflecting on the success of Christmas in July, Craig is quick to recognize the people who have helped bring the campaign to life. He gives special thanks to Mary, a longtime United Community volunteer, and Missy, one of our newer volunteers, whose enthusiasm has helped the campaign grow. Together, they’ve spent countless hours distributing flyers to local businesses, community events, and even neighborhood pools, helping spread the word and inspire others to get involved.
