While the terms equity and equality may sound similar, the implementation of one versus the other can lead to dramatically different outcomes for marginalized communities.

Equality means each individual or group of people is given the same resources or opportunities. Equity recognizes that each person has different circumstances and allocates the exact resources and opportunities needed to reach an equal outcome.

Everyone deserves
an equitable opportunity
TO SUCCEED

United Community understands that a structured, collaborative approach among residents, community organizations, government, the faith community, and other allies is critical to address the structural and systemic issues at play in the Mount Vernon/Route 1 community.

This collaborative approach is called
Collective Impact

Our approach employs a two-pronged strategy:

Collective impact brings people from different segments of the community together, in a structured way, to achieve social change.

United Community leads two Collective Impact initiatives in the Mount Vernon/Route 1 communities to remove barriers and build equity in marginalized communities.
