Northern Virginia Families Need Help Now: Rising Costs, Funding Cuts, and Growing Community Need

Despite living in one of the nation’s most prosperous regions, thousands of Northern Virginia families struggle every month to pay for housing, food, and childcare.

With many organizations working tirelessly to support these residents, one question persists: Why have conditions failed to improve over time?  Understanding the factors behind these challenges helps explain why continued support remains essential.

In the past 18 months, low-income residents of Northern Virginia have had a tougher time making ends meet.  According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, unemployment in the Washington, DC area has increased 12.2% since last year and doubled since 2023.

Grocery prices have increased by 3.2% in the last year, and 39.4% of households below the poverty line experienced food insecurity in 2024, the last date for which data are available (Federal Reserve Bank of St. LouisUSDA).

Gas prices have spiked by $1.12 in the last year, causing some families to use nearly a tenth of their income simply to get to work (AAAUrban Institute).

There is a severe lack of affordable housing in Virginia, with the National Low Income Housing Coalition stating that affordable and available rental housing is only available for 35% of extremely low-income families in Virginia.  An inflation rate of 3.8% over the past year means that wages have less purchasing power than a year ago (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics).

All of these factors mean that, while middle- and upper-income households can generally meet their basic needs without significant difficulty, rising food and housing costs have a disproportionate impact on low-income families, where limited incomes leave little room to absorb additional expenses.

At United Community, these challenges are reflected in the experiences of the families who turn to our programs for support every day. Brenda Renninger, Manager of Nutrition and Food Equity, sees firsthand how rising costs are affecting working families across our community:

“Food insecurity doesn’t always look the way people expect. Many of the families visiting our pantry are employed, yet rising housing, transportation, and grocery costs leave them struggling to make ends meet. We see parents skipping meals so their children can eat and families making impossible choices between food and other essential expenses. That’s why community support is more important now than ever.”

These realities underscore an important truth: financial hardship can affect families who are working hard and doing everything they can to stay afloat. When unexpected expenses or rising costs outpace income, even basic necessities can become difficult to afford.

Although these challenges can feel daunting, they are not insurmountable. With the right resources, support, and opportunities, families can build stability and create brighter futures. Every day, local organizations help individuals and families strengthen their financial footing, develop new skills, and work toward long-term success.

United Community partners with our neighbors on that journey by providing programs and services designed to promote stability, self-sufficiency, and lasting opportunity:

Creating opportunity:

  • Our Early Learning Center provides a safe and enriching environment for children between the ages of six weeks and five years.  This is done through a play-based, curriculum-driven approach aligned with Virginia’s Early Learning and Development Standards (ELDS).
  • Our Community Schools Program has provided academic support, family activities, and health and wellness services to students and families dealing with food insecurity, housing instability, or a lack of access to after-school care.
  • The Opportunity Neighborhoods Initiative works toward five goals that reflect what every family needs to thrive:  Welcoming and connected communities, kindergarten-ready children, academically successful youth, career-ready young adults, healthy youth, and stable families.

Building family stability:

  • Case managers in the Family Achievement Program help families whose household income is at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level to build pathways to self-sufficiency.  They do this by helping families assess needs, set goals, and provide guidance in education, employment, and financial literacy.
  • Healthy Families Fairfax helps families nurture their children’s growth while connecting them to healthcare, educational opportunities, and employment resources that foster long-term stability.

As you might imagine, we can’t serve the entire community without you.  To continue providing these vital services to our clients, we need your help in three important ways:

  • Your time: If you have some free time, you can be a part of what we do.  A few hours at our food pantry can help ensure a family has dinner for a week.  Helping at a community event can connect families to services they didn’t know existed.  Small acts of service create lasting change, so whether you’re a retiree, student, working professional, or someone with a few hours to spare each month, we want you!
  • Your talent: Everyone has something unique to offer our community.  Whether you’re a teacher, attorney, healthcare professional, skilled tradesperson, or somebody with another valuable talent, your expertise is needed.  Whatever your background, we need your help!
  • Your treasure: Simply put, charitable programs require funding.  Donations help us maintain our facilities, purchase resources for our programs, and support the dedicated staff who make our work possible.  Not everyone has the time to volunteer with us and we understand that life is busy.  However, financial contributions of any size help us to continue serving our community.

Federal Food Distribution

At a time when more families than ever are turning to United Community for help, recent county funding cuts have directly impacted two of our most critical services: our Early Learning Center and food programs. These programs provide immediate support to families facing hardship while also laying the foundation for long-term stability and self-sufficiency. As the cost of housing, food, and other essentials continues to rise, the demand for these services is growing rapidly. The need in our community has never been greater—and neither has the opportunity to make a meaningful difference.

Every child deserves the chance to succeed.

Every family deserves the opportunity to thrive.

Every neighbor deserves a community that cares.

With your support, families in our community can move from crisis to stability, and from stability to opportunity.

DONATE TODAY AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE.
